AFFECT (Academic Female Finance Committee), a committee of the American Finance Association (AFA), invites you to attend a live Zoom panel on “COVID-19 and Academic Career Management.” Everyone is welcome, especially junior scholars in academic finance.

The panel

The panel will be chaired by Wei Jiang (Arthur F. Burns Professor of Free and Competitive Enterprise at Columbia Business School), joined by:

Isha Agarwal, Assistant Professor of Finance, UBC Sauder School of Business

Stefano DellaVigna, Daniel E. Koshland, Sr. Distinguished Professor of Economics and

Professor of Business Administration, Berkeley Haas School of Business and Department of Economics

Sabrina Howell, Assistant Professor of Finance, NYU Stern School of Business

Nadya Malenko, Associate Professor of Finance, Boston College Carroll School of Management

Issues which will be discussed

The panelists will discuss a variety of issues related to the impact of COVID-19 on career progress of junior scholars.  They will share their own thoughts and experience on the best practice and strategies in this unusual time.   Topics include:

  1. How can junior scholars, especially women, promote their work and manage their own visibility in the virtual world?  How can we retain intellectual exchange with very limited human contact?
  2. How will the new work format affect our research productivity?  How does the answer depend on family structure (which is correlated with gender)?  How do we view the recent research on the disparity impact for men and women?
  3. What are the tips for time management and daily prioritization while working from home, especially for junior scholars with young children?
  4. The covid-19 shock has already spurred a wave of new research.  As a community how should we rationalize and leverage the research opportunities?

Please block your time for 11:00-12:20 EST, on the 12th of June.
